The Hilma Hooker is a beautiful 236 foot long ship. During the last years of her active duty she was used as a drug smuggling ship. While passing Bonaire she was captured when she had to go into port with engine problems. The authorities who had the ship already under surveillance boarded her and found 25,000lb 11,000 kg of Marijuana in a false bulkhead. With poor maintenance, she started to take on water at the dock. It was decided to anchor her somewhere where she would not cause any problems if she would sink. This is where she finally sunk in September of 1984.Read More
If you have ever been on Bonaire you will have seen donkeys. There are many wild roaming donkeys on the Island. This is a problem as they cause many traffic accidents. To give the donkeys a better life and a safer place to live Marina Melis and her husband Ed Koopman started The Donkey Sanctuary.
Playa Funchi is a dive site deep into Washington-Slagbaai National Park. It is also located on the opposite side of the Island. With these two factors in mind you need to allow for a 3-4 hour travel time to and from the location. Having said all this, it is worth while driving through the park and seeing all the cool sights in the park. Just plan to do this in the morning as the park closes at 5 sharp and they will not let you in if they think you can’t make it out on time.Read More
